Minnesota License Plate Search: License Plate Lookup in Minnesota
December 5, 2022

A license plate is the first and most important means of identifying your vehicle.

The license plate number serves as proof that your vehicle is registered correctly, displays the form of registration you possess, and links you to the vehicle easily as the vehicle owner.

Minnesota, as a state in the United States of America, first started registering vehicles in the state in 1903, and the state began issuing license plates to vehicle owners by 1909.

Plates are issued by the state's Department of Public Safety through the Division of Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS).

It is required by Minnesota Laws for vehicles owned by residents and operating on public roads and highways in the state to be duly registered and have a license plate.

This license plate must be appropriately attached to the front and rear of the vehicle every time. Passenger vehicles, trucks, and vans are not excluded from this law.

Depending on the type of vehicle, the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) will issue the necessary amount of license plates.

For instance, motorcycles, mopeds, dealer and collector vehicles, and trailers only require one license plate.

Categories of License Plates in Minnesota

Minnesota's Department of Public Safety issues three different significant categories of License plates. These are:

2. Special Interest Plate: These are a unique type of license plate issued to an outstanding resident of the state, such as veterans, firefighters, and ambulance volunteers, or for a particular purpose, such as critical habitat or agriculture.

3. Personalized License plate: These license plates are issued to vehicle owners who desire to choose the characters on their license plates and not get the regular license plate character like commercial plates.

Other types of license plates in Minnesota are disability license plates, recreational license plates, dealer license plates, prorate license plates, and special registration license plates.

It is mandatory for dealer license plates and passenger vehicle license plates in Minnesota to be changed every seven years.
